Top tips for students to get the most from their Industry Expo
The FMP Industry Expo is like going to a craft market for careers! It’s the most efficient way to ‘shop around’, make valuable connections and find an opportunity that can shape your life. It’s exciting. It’s fast-paced. And it goes by really quickly!
So, preparation is key.
1. Make a list and check it twice.
Make a list of the occupations that might interest you. Keep it short and simple and use it to guide you to the right stands on the day.
2. Flag your favourites.
Research which companies will be exhibiting at the expo and mark the ones from your preferred industry. Visit them first, then… go off-piste. Visit companies that just have a good vibe and find out what kind of roles they offer.
3. Impress the socks off your new boss. Approach every stand like you might be talking to your next boss. Do some background research and have notes on companies or industries you are interested in. You will stand out and have more meaningful conversations.
4. Talk, don't read. Stand wills have brochures, videos and merchandise. Grab your gear but don’t waste time reading when there is a person you can talk to. Make a connection, build your network and get the insider’s scoop on working in the company.
5. Take note. Take lots of notes. Bring a pen and paper and jot down names, numbers or anything that will help you to remember what to follow up on later.
6. Then… DO follow up. If you really want to make an impression, get a business card from someone on the stand, and email them promptly to thank them for their time.
7. Save time to explore. Know what you’re into… and then challenge that. Save yourself time to consider some options that weren’t on your list…not even close. The expo is all about exploration!
8. Enjoy yourself. Your future is exciting and this expo is all about you. Make it work for you in a way that empowers you, makes you feel comfortable and brings you joy. Employers want to meet you as an individual.
